Trump vows to help Lebanon but offers no timeline for Israeli withdrawal

Asked about a withdrawal schedule, Trump said Israel was “in the process” of redeploying, while Al Jazeera noted that Israel has not vacated any area it has occupied since March.

The meeting followed a US State Department announcement of an initial “pilot zone” under a Lebanon-Israel framework. Al Jazeera says such zones are intended to allow the Lebanese army to deploy, prevent a Hezbollah military presence, begin reconstruction and enable residents to return. Aoun praised Trump and the US-brokered framework, saying his goal was to permanently end hostilities between Lebanon and Israel. He also sought support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, describing them as central to security and stability. The framework, as described by Al Jazeera, links Israeli withdrawal to the disarmament of Hezbollah, a group that has criticized Aoun’s direct engagement with Israel.

Trump also revived the idea that Syria could help disarm Hezbollah, despite Syrian authorities previously rejecting such a role, and said he would be willing to speak with Hezbollah if Aoun wanted him to. The issue matters because Lebanon is facing Israeli military occupation in the south, pressure over Hezbollah’s weapons, and the challenge of restoring state authority while avoiding a broader conflict.
