Trump threatens to stop sale of Canadian Bombardier jets in US

BBC World News reports that President Donald Trump has threatened to block sales of Bombardier aircraft in the United States unless the Canadian manufacturer shifts production there. In a Truth Social post, Trump said the company could no longer sell in the US while accusing it of taking advantage of the American market. The warning came as tensions in the Canada-US trade dispute were rising, with Canadian retaliatory tariffs scheduled to take effect on $20 billion in US goods.

Bombardier is based in Montreal and is among Canada’s largest companies. The BBC notes that the company already has a US presence, including a factory in Kansas that builds special mission military aircraft and employs thousands of American workers. Its jets are also made across facilities in Canada, the US and Mexico, and the company says its aircraft comply with the North American trade agreement known as USMCA in the US and CUSMA in Canada.

The report says it is not clear how Trump would try to prevent Bombardier from doing business in the US. Bombardier and Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office were contacted for comment. Quebec premier Christine Fréchette defended the company as an important part of the province’s economy and said Quebec would not accept pressure over where firms must manufacture in order to access a market.

More broadly, the dispute is part of a deeper breakdown in trade talks between Ottawa and Washington, after negotiations collapsed late last month and the US imposed new tariffs on several Canadian goods.
