Al Jazeera reports that President Donald Trump threatened on July 22, 2026, to order US strikes on Iranian bridges or power plants whenever Iranian forces fire on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. In a social media post, Trump said the threatened targets could include infrastructure in or near Tehran, framing the warning as a response to attacks using missiles, rockets, drones or other weapons against shipping in the waterway.

The report says Iran signalled it would respond if its civilian infrastructure were hit. Citing Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency, Al Jazeera said an Iranian military source warned that Tehran would target regional infrastructure in return, including bridges and energy facilities linked to US interests. The same source said shipping through Hormuz was safe if coordinated with Iran.

According to Al Jazeera, the threat comes amid renewed US-Iran hostilities after a memorandum of understanding intended to halt the war broke down over the status of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has argued that the agreement gives it authority to manage the strategic passage, while the Trump administration says the strait should remain an international free transit route. Al Jazeera reported that recent attacks followed crossings by ships on the Omani side without coordination with Iran.
