His executive action cited three areas: Canadian taxes on some US vehicles and parts outside USMCA coverage, protection of Canada’s dairy market, and provincial boycotts of US alcoholic drinks introduced during earlier tariff disputes. Trump said Canada had been tough on the US, while also saying he liked the country and its people.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had spoken with Trump and that the two leaders agreed to intensify trade discussions. Carney also said Canada was considering all response options, describing the US move as part of a series of unilateral trade actions that he said violated the USMCA. Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged Canada to respond with equivalent tariffs if Washington proceeds.

The dispute matters because the US and Canada are deeply connected trading partners, particularly in autos and industrial supply chains. The BBC noted that tariffs were already in place on Canadian steel, aluminium, copper, softwood lumber and some vehicle parts, while Canada maintains counter-tariffs on selected US metals and vehicles.
