What the report says

Arlington County, Virginia, has filed a new lawsuit aimed at stopping President Donald Trump’s proposed triumphal arch near Washington, DC, according to Al Jazeera’s report published on October 9, 2026. The county government is suing the US Department of the Interior and the National Park Service, arguing that the planning process has moved too quickly and that the project could harm public safety, traffic flow and nearby residents.

The planned structure is described as a 250-foot arch modeled on the Arc de Triomphe and intended for a site near Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington. Local officials say the location is in a busy transportation corridor and could affect emergency access and even require changes to nearby flight paths because of its proximity to the airport approach routes.

The lawsuit claims federal agencies have not carried out a sufficient environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act. Arlington County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti said the community would bear the project’s biggest burdens, while the Interior Department said it is following applicable laws and regulations. The White House did not comment, Al Jazeera reported.

The case adds to existing legal and political controversy around Trump’s wider efforts to reshape parts of Washington, including other proposed changes to major landmarks and public spaces. The arch has already drawn concern from preservation and aviation observers, and it had received early approval from the US Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump.
