Trump's peace envoys to visit Moscow and Kyiv over weekend, reports say

What the report says
US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to travel to Russia and Ukraine this weekend as part of President Donald Trump’s effort to push forward talks aimed at ending the war, according to reports cited by BBC World News. Axios said the pair would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday and then speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday.
BBC World News said Witkoff and Kushner have already visited Russia several times, but the planned Kyiv stop would be their first reported set of talks in Ukraine. The article noted that the two have been leading Trump’s peace efforts, but that a significant gap remains between Moscow and Kyiv over any settlement. Zelensky had earlier said tentative dates had been set for the envoys’ visit in the coming days.
The reporting also placed the trip against a backdrop of continued fighting. On Friday, Zelensky said a Russian drone struck the office of Ukraine’s security chief in Kyiv, though the official appeared unhurt. Putin, speaking at an economic forum, said there were “chances” for a deal but repeated demands that Ukraine make territorial concessions, positions Kyiv and its European allies have rejected.
If confirmed, the meetings would be the latest high-level diplomatic attempt to restart stalled peace efforts more than three years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
