What the report says

The United States has announced a new round of sanctions on Iran and on companies and individuals in other countries that Washington says help sustain Iranian oil sales, weapons procurement and cyber operations. According to Al Jazeera, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the measures in Washington on Aug. 24, 2026, describing them as part of a broader push to cut off Iran’s access to revenue and trade during an extended diplomatic and military confrontation.

Al Jazeera reported that nearly 60 people and entities were designated. The list includes Iranian government bodies such as the Ministry of Intelligence and Security and the Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics, along with related firms and individuals accused of supporting shipping, procurement and cyber activity. The Treasury also said a separate procurement network spanning the Middle East and East Asia helped Iran acquire sensitive dual-use technology for nuclear research and ballistic missile development.

The sanctions extend well beyond Iran, reaching businesses and intermediaries in Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, France, Syria, Ukraine and the Marshall Islands. Companies in those places were accused of handling logistics, payments, shipping or petrochemical trade tied to Iranian oil and sanctioned networks, including actors linked to Iran’s so-called shadow banking and shadow fleet systems.

Iran rejected the move, with Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh saying the measures would not succeed. The announcement matters because it shows Washington is intensifying economic pressure on Tehran by targeting not only Iranian institutions but also the overseas commercial channels that help them operate. Al Jazeera’s report also places the action in the context of a widening sanctions strategy focused on technology, gold, aviation, shipping and digital assets.
