Trump praises Giant Eagle for its price-lowering promotion - TribLIVE.com

What the report says
TribLIVE reported that President Donald Trump used a Sunday night Truth Social post to praise Pittsburgh-based grocery chain Giant Eagle over a summer price-cutting campaign. In the post, Trump said he had been told the company would reduce prices on more than 300 products through Labor Day, and he framed the move as a response to his push for lower costs for working families.
According to TribLIVE, the promotion is not a first-of-its-kind move for Giant Eagle. The chain ran a similar seasonal pricing effort beginning in October 2025, also covering about 300 items, with company officials then citing inflation pressures. Giant Eagle spokesperson Justin Weinstein told TribLIVE the company used lessons from that earlier effort to shape the current savings program.
The current campaign, branded under Giant Eagle’s “Because It Matters” strategy and “On Sale This Season” promotion, applies to many of the chain’s most commonly purchased products. TribLIVE listed examples including eggs, shredded cheese, 80/20 ground beef, tomatoes, bacon, potatoes and frozen vegetables. The article says the current promotion runs through Sept. 9.
The attention comes as Giant Eagle is set for a major ownership change. TribLIVE reported that Cincinnati-based Kroger announced July 1 that it would purchase all 197 Giant Eagle stores and stand-alone pharmacies. The report said Giant Eagle is expected to keep its name and continue operating its supermarket, pharmacy and Market District brands as a Kroger division, a significant development for a retailer closely associated with Western Pennsylvania.
