What the report says

US President Donald Trump said he is pausing a planned set of new tariffs on Canadian goods for three days while the United States and Canada work toward finalising a trade deal, BBC World News reported. The announcement came just before a 50% levy on nearly $20bn in Canadian imports was due to begin.

According to BBC World News, Trump said on social media that the delay was based on the two countries having a deal “subject to the finalization of documents.” The talks follow weeks of tension over tariffs and trade barriers, including disputes over autos, liquor sales, dairy access and other sectors affected by earlier US measures.

The report said Canadian and US negotiators have been in intensive discussions since July, and Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke twice this week. The proposed tariff changes were part of a broader effort to resolve several outstanding issues between the two countries, both major trading partners.

BBC World News also noted that Trump said a final agreement could reopen the Keystone XL pipeline project, which would link Alberta to the US. The pipeline has previously been blocked by US administrations and remains politically controversial, with environmental and Indigenous groups opposing it. The developments matter because further tariff escalation could have raised costs and disrupted supply chains on both sides of the border.
