BBC News reports that President Donald Trump has ordered warning signs to be placed outside the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, alerting visitors to exhibits his administration considers “inaccurate.” The order directs the Department of the Interior to post the notices and point visitors toward what it describes as accurate information about U.S. history.

According to the BBC, the Friday executive order, titled “Restoring Trust in the Smithsonian Institution,” accuses the museum’s leadership of failing to sufficiently celebrate the country’s founders during the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence on 4 July. The White House also alleged the museum had moved toward political activism, while the administration has repeatedly accused the Smithsonian and other academic institutions of anti-American bias. The Smithsonian did not immediately comment to the BBC.

Democrats involved in Smithsonian oversight criticized the move. Representative Melanie Stansbury, the ranking Democrat on the House Administration Committee, described the executive order on X as political overreach and said the institution and the nation’s history belong to the public rather than the president.

The BBC places the order in the context of wider Trump administration efforts to reshape federal cultural and educational policy. Smithsonian director Anthea Hartig recently faced Republican questioning in congressional hearings, and the White House Domestic Policy Council issued a report accusing the museum of erasing U.S. heritage. The Smithsonian is largely federally funded, operates 21 museums and related institutions in Washington, Virginia and New York, and offers free entry to millions of visitors each year.
