United States President Donald Trump announced a planned $15bn steel mill project in Iowa on Monday, as his administration seeks to emphasize domestic manufacturing ahead of the November midterm elections. Al Jazeera reported that the project is tied to Mesabi Metallics, a Minnesota-based steel company that recently opened the state’s first new iron ore mine in 50 years. The Iowa plant is expected to start production in 2030 and could create more than 1,700 jobs, while the first phase of construction may generate 5,000 to 6,000 temporary construction jobs, according to a White House official.

The facility would use iron ore from the Mesabi Iron Range in Minnesota. Al Jazeera said Mesabi is owned by India’s Essar Group and that the company has invested more than $2.5bn in the mine. White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers framed the announcement as evidence of Trump’s effort to revive American industry and strengthen supply chains, while Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick credited steel tariffs for helping make the mine and mill possible.

The announcement comes amid a broader push by Trump to bolster the steel sector, including 50 percent tariffs on steel and aluminium imports and the U.S. government’s expanded role in U.S. Steel following its acquisition by Japan’s Nippon Steel. The timing also reflects the political stakes in Iowa, where Republicans face a competitive Senate race and the economy remains a central issue for voters. Al Jazeera noted recent polling showing softer approval among Republicans for Trump’s handling of the economy.
