The US State Department says it has revoked more than 175,000 visas under President Donald Trump, according to an Aug. 10 report by Al Jazeera based on a department fact sheet. The action is part of a wider immigration crackdown that has also reduced travel and immigration privileges for many foreign nationals since Trump returned to the White House in 2025.

Most of the cancellations were tied to law-enforcement encounters involving criminal activity, with the department also citing visa violations, fraud, calls for violence and other national security concerns. The revocations reportedly followed the State Department’s ongoing vetting process, which it says is meant to ensure visa holders comply with their terms and do not pose a risk to Americans.

Al Jazeera reported that the leading reasons for cancellations included assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug offences. The department also pointed to individual cases involving serious criminal allegations, as well as more than 100 visas revoked at a US embassy in North Africa from parents accused of using birth tourism to secure US citizenship for their children.

The development matters because it shows the scale of the administration’s tougher approach to immigration and visa enforcement. The State Department has also tightened screening rules, including increased social media vetting, while critics have argued that such measures can chill free expression and expand surveillance of immigrants.
