Traffic Police Urge Motorists to Prioritise Road Safety Ahead of Festivals

Nile Post reports that Wakiso District Traffic Officer ASP Charlotte Ndyahabwe has appealed to motorists, parents and bodaboda riders to put road safety first as the festive travel period approaches. Speaking on Salam Omukeeze, hosted by Salmah Namwanje, she said many crashes can be avoided if road users follow traffic rules and act responsibly.

According to the report, Ndyahabwe singled out railway crossings as a major area of concern, saying drivers and pedestrians must respect warning signs because trains move on fixed routes and cannot swerve away from danger. She also said school buses and shuttles should be checked before trips to confirm they are safe to carry children, and urged school leaders, parents, traffic officers and local leaders to share responsibility for children’s safety.

Ndyahabwe also warned against careless highway driving, drunk driving and operating vehicles without the correct driving permit. She said festive-season travel often increases risks as many people move from towns to villages for celebrations. Motorists without valid licences, she warned, risk prosecution, and enforcement will be stepped up around schools, railway crossings and major routes out of Wakiso.

The Nile Post report also says the traffic officer raised concern over bodaboda thefts in Wakiso, including cases where motorcycles with digital number plates are dismantled and sold for parts. She advised riders to be cautious about passengers, unfamiliar routes and parking security, while noting that police cannot be present everywhere. The broader message from police was that enforcement, inspections and personal responsibility are all needed to reduce preventable deaths and injuries on Uganda’s roads.
