Traders appeal to PLU leadership over business challenges

Traders from Kampala, Jinja and other parts of Uganda have appealed to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) to help address business problems they say are hurting their livelihoods. According to Nile Post, the group met PLU leaders at the organisation’s secretariat in Naguru to raise concerns about delayed financial aid promised to traders whose businesses were damaged by floods, as well as broader operating difficulties.

The traders said flooding destroyed stock and capital for many businesses, leaving some unable to restart. They urged PLU to follow up with the relevant authorities so the promised support can reach those affected. They also said they want a less difficult business environment, arguing that their enterprises support families, employees and wider communities.

Another major concern involved the treatment of Ugandan traders at Entebbe International Airport. The traders said they face obstacles there despite supporting Uganda Airlines and asked for the issue to be addressed. They also raised problems affecting other sectors, including fishing, and called for government attention.

PLU Deputy Secretary General Henry Mutegeki Basaliza told the traders the organisation would engage the relevant authorities and push for a quick response. He also noted that the Minister of Trade is part of PLU’s leadership, which he said could help move the concerns forward. The meeting, as reported by Nile Post, was also framed as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between traders, PLU and government programmes.
