Tourism events key to driving Uganda’s economy, says NTEOF after successful Rwenzori Marathon

What the report says
The National Tourism Events Organisers Federation (NTEOF) says tourism and sporting events are becoming an important part of Uganda’s economy by creating jobs, supporting local enterprises and drawing visitors. The group made the case while speaking to local and international media during the Tusker Lite Mount Rwenzori Marathon in Kasese, which it described as a showcase for the country’s tourism potential.
According to the Nile Post report, NTEOF president Peter Sebulime said such events should be seen not only as entertainment or athletics, but also as platforms that open business opportunities for communities and promote Uganda to potential tourists and investors. The federation said event-related spending can benefit hotels, restaurants, transport providers, tour companies and vendors, especially in host areas like Kasese.
The marathon, held on August 22, 2026, reportedly drew thousands of runners from Uganda and abroad and has become part of the country’s growing tourism events calendar. NTEOF also used the occasion to present its own impact campaign on the main stage, highlighting its role in promoting the sector.
The federation said it wants closer cooperation with event organisers, government agencies and other tourism stakeholders to expand the sector’s contribution to the economy. Uganda Tourism Board chief executive Juliana Kagwa praised the federation’s work and indicated support for efforts to strengthen Uganda’s position in regional meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions, or MICE, tourism.
