Tororo Archdiocese challenges men on wills, domestic violence and prostrate cancer

The Catholic Men’s Apostolate in the Archdiocese of Tororo, eastern Uganda, has adopted a five-point set of resolutions aimed at changing family life and addressing problems it says are affecting Catholic households. The decisions were made at a four-day men’s conference and retreat held at St. Wilbrod Nagongera Parish from August 25 to 28, 2026, according to The Independent Uganda.

The measures focus on domestic violence, substance abuse, succession planning, men’s health and financial discipline. Delegates rejected gender-based violence and said parish branches should create small mediation teams to help resolve family disputes before marriages break down. They also urged men to avoid alcohol abuse and the use of drugs such as local waragi, opium and marijuana, while supporting parish-based counselling and rehabilitation referrals for those struggling with addiction.

Health and inheritance planning were central to the resolutions. Men aged 40 and above were encouraged to undergo yearly prostate-specific antigen screening, and the conference called for wider access to testing in public health facilities. It also resolved that Catholic men should write valid wills to protect widows, children and family homes, and hold workshops on succession planning. The group further encouraged savings groups and responsible use of money, including support for the Archdiocese’s cathedral construction fund.

The broader significance is that the church body is trying to respond to common social and economic pressures affecting families. More generally, faith-based groups in Uganda often use parish structures to promote health awareness, conflict resolution and financial discipline, especially in rural communities.
