Ugandan biotechnology company Dei BioPharma says it has filed seven patent applications in the United States for a modular messenger RNA cancer-vaccine platform. The company said the filings were made with the US Patent and Trademark Office between 18 and 25 August and were led by founder Dr. Matthias Magoola as inventor. The announcement places the Ugandan firm within a broader global race to develop off-the-shelf cancer immunotherapies.

According to the Watchdog Uganda report, the applications cover several molecular targets linked to cancers, including a fusion-junction target tied to certain leukaemias, an EGFRvIII-related target associated with some gliomas, an NPM1 target in acute myeloid leukaemia, a RAS-focused design, a TP53 variant, HPV16/18-based constructs, and an umbrella platform intended to support multiple products. Dei BioPharma said its approach is to match candidates to recurring tumour changes, and in some cases to HLA type, rather than to the organ where the cancer started.

Dr. Magoola said in the company statement that the goal is to build a long-term immune platform that could help make many cancers more preventable, controllable or less likely to return. The report also says he has more than 100 US patent filings, with about 70 published, and notes prior USPTO and FDA-related milestones mentioned by the company.

Dei BioPharma, founded in 2014 and based at a manufacturing complex in Matugga near Kampala, says it aims to serve African and global markets with vaccines, biologics, biosimilars and mRNA therapies. More broadly, the filing underscores growing interest in cancer vaccines, while the company’s claim to be the first Africa-based entity to lead such an effort should be treated as the company’s own assertion as reported by Watchdog Uganda.
