Tooro Kingdom resumes Amasaza tournament

What the report says
Tooro Kingdom has said it will restart the fifth edition of its Amasaza football and netball tournament after suspending the competition when Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV died in August. According to The Independent Uganda, the tournament began on July 12, 2026, and had already reached the semi-final stage before the pause. Officials said the kingdom consulted major sponsors and received approval from the new king, Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, to complete the event.
The announcement was made at the kingdom headquarters in Muchwa, Fort Portal, where deputy prime minister Henry Basaliza urged people in Tooro to back cultural activities and kingdom programmes. Sports and Education Minister Francis Kateeba said the competition will resume on October 18 with the unfinished football semi-final between Fort Portal and Burahya counties. The football final is scheduled for October 24 at Kitchwamba Technical Institute playground and is expected to be officiated by the new king.
The kingdom also outlined broader plans to expand sports beyond the Amasaza tournament, including clan competitions and an Omukama Cup for schools and higher institutions. Officials said these activities are meant to strengthen unity, promote the kingdom’s identity, and help identify young sporting talent. The tournament involves representatives from Tooro’s nine counties, and prize money has been set for both football and netball teams, according to the report.
