What the report says

Fort Portal, Uganda — Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has reappointed Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki as acting prime minister of Tooro Kingdom for a six-month transitional period, according to The Independent Uganda. The announcement came as the kingdom begins a new phase after the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV, and followed Nyabongo’s recent formal crowning as successor.

The reappointment was announced by the king’s principal personal secretary and spokesperson, Paul Nyakaana Businge. Rwomiire had previously served as prime minister from February 2025 until Oyo’s death in August, and was described as being tasked with helping guide the kingdom through the change in leadership. Nyabongo also reappointed Prince Charles Kamurasi as head of the Babiito royal clan, with Bernard Kato Rwakatale as assistant, and named an 11-member advisory committee to support the administration.

Rwomiire said he would approach the role seriously and work with the royal family, kingdom leaders and residents during the transition. He said priorities include clearing salary arrears for staff at the kingdom offices in Muchwa, improving administrative systems, completing incubation hubs under the Tooro Youth Empowerment Project, and expanding youth opportunities. Other stated goals include county visits by the king, support for agriculture, finishing the Masaza tournament, and drafting a strategic plan.

The changes signal how Tooro’s institutions are being reorganized after the succession. In broader context, such transitional arrangements are common in traditional leadership systems as they settle new administrative teams and priorities.
