Tooro begins nine-day mourning for King Oyo

The body of Tooro’s late monarch, Omukama King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, has arrived in Uganda, according to Sqoop Uganda, setting in motion a nine-day mourning period across the kingdom. The mourning is scheduled to run from September 4 to September 12, 2026, ending with the king’s burial.

Sqoop Uganda reported that the Babiito Royal Clan said the observances will follow Tooro customs and traditions after the death of a reigning king. Clan spokesperson Moses Amooti urged subjects to suspend farming during the mourning period, describing the pause as part of established ritual practice. He also asked men to leave their marital beds and refrain from sexual intimacy during the nine days, saying the community should fully respect the late king.

The clan further appealed to bar owners, entertainment venues and the wider public to avoid loud music and other disruptive activity while the kingdom grieves. Amooti said such behavior would be disrespectful and called on people to give the royal household space for mourning.

The reported restrictions remain in force until September 12, when King Oyo is expected to be laid to rest. The development is significant because King Oyo’s reign began when he was still a child and lasted for more than two decades, making his funeral a major cultural moment for Tooro and Uganda’s wider traditional leadership landscape.
