Togo charges two French journalists over incorrect documents, rights group says

What the report says
Reporters Without Borders says two French documentary filmmakers detained in Togo since late July have now been charged with “false declarations,” even though they reportedly held the visas and filming permission needed to work there. The men, Gaël Mocaër and Sebastian Perez Pezzani, were arrested on 27 July while working in Kara, in northern Togo, on a project for France Télévisions, according to BBC Africa’s account of the group’s statement.
RSF and the production company Tony Comiti Productions say the pair were in compliance with local rules, and the rights group has described their detention as unjustified and disproportionate. BBC Africa reports that France’s foreign ministry has confirmed two French nationals are being held, but has not given further details. Togolese authorities had not publicly commented in the report.
The men are said to be in pre-trial detention at a law-enforcement facility near Lomé, while a third person, their Togolese fixer Fred Vedomey, has also been detained. RSF said one of the journalists needs urgent medical attention. Family members, quoted in a joint statement shared by RSF, said they hoped for a quick resolution.
The case is unfolding amid wider concerns about press freedom in Togo. BBC Africa notes that the country has restricted foreign media in recent years and has faced criticism for pressure on journalists and political dissent. The report also points to other recent incidents involving French media workers in the country, adding context to why the detentions have drawn international attention.
