Today in History: Bobi Wine Unveils National Unity Platform

What the report says
Nile Post’s “Today in History” item revisits July 22, 2020, when Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, announced the National Unity Platform at the People Power offices in Kamwokya, Kampala. The report says the move converted the People Power political pressure group into a formal party structure able to sponsor candidates in the 2021 General Election.
According to Nile Post, Kyagulanyi’s team did not start a new party from scratch. Instead, it took over the National Unity, Reconciliation and Development Party, a previously registered organization associated with Moses Nkonge Kibalama, and renamed it the National Unity Platform. Kibalama handed leadership to Kyagulanyi, who became party president and NUP’s presidential flag bearer. The party also introduced the umbrella as its symbol, presented as a message of unity and broad political inclusion.
The report frames the takeover as a major tactical step because People Power had faced obstacles in obtaining registration as a party. With legal status, NUP could nominate candidates nationally, and Nile Post says the launch drew politicians and supporters from other opposition groups, including the Democratic Party and the Forum for Democratic Change.
Nile Post notes that NUP’s first major test came in the January 2021 elections, when it secured 57 parliamentary seats and became the largest opposition party in Parliament, displacing FDC as the Official Opposition. The article adds that the party later moved from Kamwokya to Makerere Kavule and has faced internal tensions, including a 2024 fallout involving former Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, while retaining the activist identity associated with People Power.
