‘To challenge deadly blockade’: New flotilla mission sets sail for Gaza

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition says a new international mission is now underway as several vessels head toward Gaza, with stops planned at ports in Europe before an expected attempt to reach the enclave in October. In a statement cited by Al Jazeera, the coalition said the voyage is meant to challenge what it calls Israel’s illegal and deadly blockade of Gaza and to press for safer passage for the boats and their passengers.

According to the report, two ships have already departed: Handala II travelled through ports in Scandinavia earlier this summer, and the vessel Kate left Bristol, UK, and has since called at ports in Ireland, Germany and France. Further stops in Spain, Portugal and Italy are planned. The mission includes human rights advocates, peace activists, elected representatives, journalists, medical workers and pro-Palestinian campaigners.

The coalition is asking governments to intervene diplomatically, warn of consequences if the boats are attacked or seized, and use broader political and economic pressure to end the blockade and the flow restrictions on food, water and medicine. Participants said the effort is continuing despite the risks, while the coalition also pointed to previous Israeli interceptions of flotillas and allegations of mistreatment of detained activists.

Al Jazeera also linked the mission to the wider humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where aid groups say conditions remain severe despite a ceasefire announced in October 2025. The report said water, sanitation and health services remain badly damaged, underscoring why flotilla organizers see the mission as both a symbolic and practical challenge to the siege.
