TikTok settles with US Justice Department for $400m over child privacy laws

What the report says
TikTok has agreed to a $400m settlement with the United States Department of Justice in a case tied to alleged violations of children’s online privacy protections, according to Al Jazeera’s report. The agreement involves TikTok, its parent company ByteDance and related entities, and was announced by the DOJ on Friday. The department said the case centered on compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which requires parental consent before collecting personal information from users under 13.
The DOJ said its lawsuit, filed in 2024, alleged that TikTok allowed children to open regular accounts and use the platform in ways that exposed them to adults and other users, while also collecting personal data without parental permission. Under the settlement terms described by the department, TikTok will pay $300m immediately and a further $100m after a court ends a prior settlement involving Musical.ly, the app acquired by ByteDance and folded into TikTok.
The case adds to broader scrutiny of TikTok in the United States, where lawmakers and regulators have raised privacy and security concerns for years. Al Jazeera noted that ByteDance separately agreed in January to a US-majority joint venture arrangement aimed at protecting domestic data and avoiding a possible ban. The settlement matters because it resolves a major federal privacy dispute while reinforcing the rules governing children’s data online.
