What the report says

Three Mitooma District Local Government officials have been brought before Uganda’s Anti-Corruption Court over allegations tied to road maintenance funds, according to Nile Post. The accused are Acting District Engineer John Baptist Tumwebaze, District Road Inspector Franklin Mandela and Sector Accountant Lydia Aheereza. They were remanded until October 16, 2026, as the case proceeds.

Prosecutors say the officials were involved in the alleged diversion and misuse of public money intended for mechanised road works. The court case includes accusations such as abuse of office, conspiracy, diversion of public resources, embezzlement, false claims and causing financial loss. The reported period in question is June 17 to 30, 2026, at district offices in Mitooma.

Nile Post reports that the disputed funds were linked to work on four roads: Katwe–Karangara–Karimbiro, Kirambi–Kirera–Ruziizi, Omuribiri–Nyakizinga–Mutaka and Kyanzaire–Bukuba. The publication says Shs31.16 million was allegedly diverted for fuel that was not supplied and allowances for work that was not carried out, while the total claimed government loss is Shs45.07 million.

The case comes amid Uganda’s broader anti-corruption enforcement efforts in local government. In general terms, such proceedings often attract attention because road funding is a recurring area of dispute in district administrations, where allegations can involve procurement, fuel, allowances and project supervision. The accused are presumed innocent unless a court finds otherwise.
