Three injured as bus crashes into bridge in Soroti

The Observer reported that three people were seriously injured when a Kakise passenger bus crashed into a bridge at Opuyo trading centre in Soroti city in the early hours of Sunday. The bus, registration number UAS 159P, was reportedly travelling from Soroti to Kampala when the incident occurred at around midnight.

According to the report, eyewitness Isaac Olinga said people had gathered nearby to watch a World Cup football match when a fight broke out. Olinga told The Observer that, as the confrontation escalated, one person tried to cross the road and came into the path of the bus. He said the driver appeared to swerve to avoid the pedestrian before losing control and hitting the bridge.

The Observer identified the driver as Alfred Ekongo and said he was among the three injured people. The injured were taken to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Police later removed the damaged bus from the scene and took it to Soroti Central Police Station.

The publisher reported that investigations into the cause of the crash had begun. The incident highlights the risks faced by long-distance passenger vehicles when sudden hazards emerge on busy roads, especially at night and in areas where crowds gather close to traffic routes.
