Thousands displaced as wildfire threatens homes in US state of Nevada

What the report says
A fast-moving wildfire in northwest Nevada has prompted major evacuations and a state of emergency, according to Al Jazeera, as flames moved from the Sierra Nevada foothills toward Reno. The blaze, identified as the Hawk Fire, began near the Hawk Meadow Trail close to Reno on Saturday and expanded quickly through the day amid strong winds, low humidity and dry vegetation.
By Sunday, officials said nearly 14,000 homes had been evacuated and the fire had grown to more than 4,450 hectares (10,500 acres). The article reported that about 10,000 homes and businesses were without power in Washoe County. Local fire officials described the situation as highly dynamic, while Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve urged residents to leave immediately if told to evacuate, saying the priority was protecting lives and allowing firefighters to work more effectively.
Evacuation areas reached the edge of the University of Nevada, Reno campus, and county officials opened the Reno-Sparks Convention Center for evacuees, with separate arrangements for pets and large animals. Casinos in Reno also offered discounted rooms to displaced residents. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared an emergency in Washoe County and deployed the Nevada National Guard to assist with aerial firefighting and neighborhood security.
Al Jazeera also noted that around 400 personnel from local, state and federal agencies were involved. Reno-Tahoe International Airport remained unaffected as of Sunday. The situation highlights how quickly wildfire conditions can change in the western United States, especially during periods of wind and dry weather.
