Al Jazeera, citing Gaza health officials and reporting from AFP and Reuters, says an Israeli air strike hit the al-Masri family home in Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood on Tuesday, killing Firas al-Masri, his wife Salsabeel and their four children while they were asleep. The report said mourners gathered as rescue workers dealt with fires and recovered bodies from the damaged building.

The Israeli military acknowledged carrying out the strike and said it had aimed at a Hamas member, while adding that it was reviewing the outcome, according to the article. Firas al-Masri’s father, Abu Yusuf al-Masri, told Reuters the family had no warning and described being unable to rescue children and grandchildren from the flames, saying Gaza offered no safe place.

The attack comes despite a US-backed ceasefire agreed in October, which Al Jazeera says has stopped full-scale combat but not frequent Israeli strikes. The outlet reported that more than 1,150 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed by Israeli strikes since the agreement. Mediation efforts involving Egypt, Qatar, Turkiye and the United States have sought to advance US President Donald Trump’s plan, including Hamas disarmament and Israeli withdrawals, but the report said there has been little visible progress.

Al Jazeera also cited the UN human rights office, whose spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan said in Geneva that at least 57 Palestinians, including children and women, were killed in Israeli attacks from July 13 to 20, not counting the al-Masri family. He warned that civilian deaths raise serious international humanitarian law concerns.
