The Rwandan eyeing Champions League history against Man Utd

Rwanda international Joy-Lance Mickels is set to make history as the first player from the East African nation to feature in the Champions League proper, according to BBC Africa. The 32-year-old forward is expected to lead the line for Azerbaijani champions Sabah when they visit Manchester United at Old Trafford in the opening round of the league phase on Thursday evening.

BBC reports that Mickels, a lifelong United supporter, described the draw as a dream fixture but said Sabah are travelling to compete rather than simply admire the occasion. He has played a major role in the club’s progress, scoring four times in qualifying as Sabah advanced through four two-legged ties on their debut in the competition. That run included the goal that helped secure a 6-4 aggregate win over Hapoel Be'er Sheva after extra time.

Sabah, based in Masazir near Baku, won their first Azerbaijani league title last season and will also face other high-profile opponents in the Champions League league phase, including Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Arsenal. Because their home ground does not meet Uefa requirements, BBC says some home matches are expected to be played at the Olympic Stadium in Baku.

Mickels, who was born and raised in Germany and qualifies for Rwanda through his parents, made his international debut for Rwanda in March. He said he hopes his progress can encourage young Rwandan footballers by showing that patience and hard work can lead to the top level of the game.
