Benjamin Netanyahu is facing renewed political pressure in Israel after fresh media reports said he may have received warnings before the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023. According to Al Jazeera, the latest claim came from a Wall Street Journal report published this month, which suggested Egypt’s intelligence chief, Abbas Kamel, phoned Netanyahu days before the assault and had earlier delivered a warning in person in September 2023. Earlier reporting in Israeli and US media also suggested the United Arab Emirates’ president may have passed on similar concerns.

Netanyahu has denied receiving any such warning and has responded by suing over the allegations. Al Jazeera reported that neither Kamel nor the Egyptian government has commented, while the UAE foreign ministry said it would not address media speculation about leaders’ conversations. The prime minister has instead sought to shift blame toward former domestic security chief Ronen Bar, who announced he would sue Netanyahu for defamation.

The dispute comes as Israel heads toward parliamentary elections on October 27, with polling showing the October 7 security failures remain a major issue for voters. Netanyahu’s rivals, including former prime minister Naftali Bennett and former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, have used the reports to attack his fitness for office. Al Jazeera noted that analysts are divided over how much the allegations will affect the race, though they could influence turnout and enthusiasm among Netanyahu’s base.
