What the report says

The Verge reported that Light, the company behind the minimalist Light Phone line, has developed a new flip-style handset called the Light Flip, aimed at people who want a phone that does not resemble a modern smartphone. The device was detailed in a July 21, 2026, report by David Pierce, who wrote that Light cofounder Kaiwei Tang said some users, especially younger ones, had asked for a Light Phone in a flip-phone format.

According to The Verge, the Light Flip is expected to ship early next year and will cost $299. Light also plans a service bundle priced at $39 per month, with the phone owned by the customer after 24 months. The handset has a 2.8-inch non-touch display, a physical T9-style number pad, D-pad and function keys. It includes a MediaTek MT8873 processor, 128GB of storage, 6GB of RAM, USB-C charging, a headphone jack, a rear camera and a front notification light.

A central design choice is what the phone leaves out. The Verge reported that Light chose not to include an exterior screen, so users must open the device to interact with it. The phone runs LightOS, the same operating system used on the Light Phone III, though it lacks tap-to-pay because it does not include NFC. Light has also released an SDK so users can build or submit tools for the platform.

The product matters because it reflects a growing market for phones positioned as alternatives to attention-heavy smartphones. The Verge framed the Light Flip as a deliberate second phone: useful for staying reachable while making it easier to leave an iPhone or Galaxy-style device behind.
