What the report says

CBS News reported that Dr. Trisha Pasricha, an internal medicine physician and gastroenterologist who leads the Gut-Brain Institute and teaches at Harvard Medical School, appeared on the “Healthful” podcast to discuss links between digestive health and the brain. Pasricha, also known for The Washington Post’s “Ask a Doctor” column, urged listeners to view the gut as more than a digestive “plumbing” system and described how nutrition and gastrointestinal science may play a role in disease prevention and treatment.

One major takeaway from the discussion was the possible gut connection to Parkinson’s disease. According to CBS, Pasricha described a “first-gut theory” in which some Parkinson’s cases may begin with protein changes in the digestive system before affecting the brain. She said gastrointestinal problems such as constipation and nausea can appear years before tremors in some patients, and noted that REM sleep disorder may also be an early warning sign. Pasricha expressed hope that future testing could help identify prodromal Parkinson’s through gut-related markers.

CBS also highlighted Pasricha’s comments on GLP-1 medications, which are widely discussed for weight loss and diabetes treatment. Although the drugs can cause digestive side effects, Pasricha said her lab found GLP-1 users had lower risks of ulcers, colorectal cancer and several other cancers, possibly because of reduced inflammation.

The segment also emphasized fiber intake. Pasricha said most Americans fall short of recommended fiber goals and advised adding high-fiber foods rather than focusing only on removing items from meals. The report framed these points as practical examples of the growing evidence connecting gut health, inflammation and long-term brain and body health.
