WIRED reports that the Food and Drug Administration is set to consider on July 23 and 24 whether to reclassify a group of peptides in a way that could allow compounding pharmacies to make customized versions. The discussion could revisit a 2023 Biden administration decision that barred certain peptides from being compounded. According to WIRED, agency career scientists have advised against the change, but some industry figures expect approval because the review committee includes supporters of peptides.

The possible regulatory shift has drawn intense interest from telehealth companies and compounding pharmacies. Mochi Health CEO Myra Ahmad told WIRED the company is preparing pharmacies and pricing. Hims & Hers Health, which bought a peptide manufacturing facility in February 2025, is developing clinical protocols, while Olympia Pharmaceuticals said it has spent money preparing formulas in case rules change. Other firms described testing peptides such as BPC-157 and MOTS-c, both promoted in wellness and biohacking circles despite limited conventional drug-style evidence.

WIRED notes that any favorable committee decision would not immediately authorize sales; the FDA would still need to propose rules and allow public comment. Some companies, including Hims, said they intend to wait for a clearer regulatory pathway. Others are already prescribing select peptides to limited patient groups, while pharmacy industry representatives are warning members not to move ahead illegally.

The issue matters because the GLP-1 weight-loss drug boom helped normalize at-home injections and created a lucrative market for virtual clinics and compounders. WIRED also points to a large gray market of “research-grade” peptides sold online with disclaimers that they are not for human use, raising safety, oversight and consumer-protection concerns.
