Wakiso District Local Government reported that interns serving in the district have been urged to promote human rights, ethical leadership and accountability as part of efforts to strengthen public institutions and improve service delivery. The message was delivered at a human rights orientation organised by the Wakiso District Human Rights Committee, according to a July 21, 2026 post by the district’s News Communications Department.

The session focused on practical human rights principles, the protection of human rights defenders, and the role young professionals can play in advancing justice, equity and accountability in communities. Wakiso District LC V Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune commended committee chairperson Elly Kasirye and the committee for prioritising awareness among interns, and said equity and integrity in public service remain key concerns for the district.

Kasirye said interns were targeted because they are emerging public servants, professionals and community leaders. The district report said participants were reminded of fundamental rights such as education, freedom of religion, freedom of expression and access to essential services, alongside principles including equality, inclusivity, dignity, rule of law, transparency and public participation.

Facilitators from the Centre for Health, Human Rights and Development linked human rights to access to healthcare, clean water, education and social protection. The training also highlighted barriers faced by women and girls, including economic, physical, cultural, digital and political obstacles. Interns were encouraged to report service delivery gaps, challenge discrimination and apply rights-based approaches in workplaces and communities across Wakiso District.
