The country that doesn't play football... yet

What the report says

BBC Sport reported that volunteers are trying to establish football in Nauru, described as the only country never to have played an official senior international match. The Pacific island nation has minimal football infrastructure, including a single hard sand pitch, and the game is far less accepted than Australian rules football, even though global stars and major matches attract some local interest.

The effort is being led by Nauru Soccer Federation volunteers, including Charlie Pomroy, a British former academy player and technical director for Nauru Soccer. Their plans include distributing footballs to about 2,000 children aged four to 14, working through churches and the island’s 11 schools, and running coaching programmes when Pomroy visits for a training camp in December. Volunteer Tyrone Deiye is also exploring whether family land or indoor spaces could be used for more playing areas.

BBC Sport placed the project in the context of Nauru’s geography and history. The country, about 2,500 miles north-east of Australia, has around 12,000 people on 21 square kilometres. Decades of phosphate mining left large central areas difficult to use, while food imports, obesity and diabetes are major public health concerns. Sport is already important locally, especially Aussie rules, athletics and weightlifting.

Previous football initiatives have not produced an official international fixture, including proposed or informal games involving representative, refugee or expatriate sides. The new approach is presented as longer-term: building youth participation and coaching rather than staging a one-off match. Nauru is also due to host the Micronesian Games in 2028, a multi-sport event that includes football.
