Fortune reports that new survey findings point to financial pressure as a major reason many Gen Z adults are spending weekends at home and reporting loneliness. Citing a Harris Poll survey of 4,100 U.S. adults conducted in late May and early June, including 603 Gen Z adults, Fortune says 51% of Gen Z respondents reported weekend loneliness, the highest share among generations in the survey. Nearly three-quarters said they spend weekend time at home.

Libby Rodney, chief strategy officer at the Harris Poll, told Fortune the pattern reflects a “spending hangover,” with young adults choosing to avoid financial regret rather than pursue social plans. The survey found 68% of Gen Z respondents said going out is not worth the effect on their wallet, while 62% avoid making weekend plans to prevent regret afterward. Fortune also reported that, when asked what they would do with an unexpected $100 for a weekend, 71% of Gen Z respondents said they would save it or use it for bills.
