The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Tim Bankston, a former Simeon basketball standout and the boys basketball coach at Thornton Fractional North High School in Calumet City, was found fatally shot Wednesday morning inside a home in Auburn Gresham on Chicago’s South Side. Chicago police said Bankston, 60, was discovered unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the abdomen around 10 a.m. in the 7600 block of South Emerald Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Sun-Times, police reported no arrests, said no one else was injured and released no further details. The paper, citing police radio traffic, reported that a 911 caller said a friend was not breathing at the home shortly before 10 a.m.; an officer later found Bankston wounded, and radio traffic indicated a shell casing was found in the basement. A dispatcher said there had been no reports of shots fired nearby in the previous 24 hours.

Bankston was a major figure in Chicago high school basketball. He helped lead Simeon to the 1984 state championship, scoring 25 points with 12 rebounds in the title game against Evanston. He later played at Bradley and Loyola, was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame as a player, and had coached TF North since 2002. The Sun-Times reported his teams went 370-246 across 24 seasons.

Family members, former Simeon teammates, TF North players and local officials gathered near the scene Wednesday. Friends and former players described Bankston as a demanding coach and mentor whose influence extended beyond the court.
