Texas carries out first US execution since Christa Pike's botched lethal injections

What the report says
Texas carried out the execution of Jamaal Howard by lethal injection on Wednesday evening, according to BBC World News. Howard, 46, was pronounced dead at a prison in Huntsville after receiving pentobarbital. The execution came shortly after lawyers for Howard sought to halt it over concerns raised by the botched lethal injection attempt involving Christa Pike in Tennessee the previous week.
BBC reported that Howard’s legal team argued he faced similar risks because Texas intended to use the same drug, and they also questioned whether the state’s pentobarbital supply had degraded. Their requests were rejected by a state court, and the US Supreme Court also declined to intervene. Howard’s lawyers had additionally asked Texas Governor Greg Abbott to delay the execution, but no reprieve was granted.
Howard had been on death row for the 2000 killing of convenience store clerk Vickie Swartout during a robbery in Texas. BBC said Howard was 20 at the time and stole cigarettes and cash from the store. Before his death, he apologized to Swartout’s family, who were present in the witness room. The execution was notable because it was the first in the US since the failed attempt to execute Pike, drawing fresh attention to debates over lethal injection procedures and drug protocols.
