Tesla stock slides after profit miss; full-year capex spend of $25 billion confirmed - Yahoo Finance
What the report says
Yahoo Finance reported that Tesla shares fell sharply Thursday after the electric-vehicle maker posted second-quarter earnings that disappointed investors despite stronger-than-expected revenue. Tesla closed down 14.5% at $319.69, its lowest finish since Aug. 5, 2025. The company reported revenue of $28.24 billion, above Bloomberg consensus expectations of $26.32 billion and 26% higher than a year earlier, but adjusted earnings of $0.33 per share missed the $0.50 estimate. Adjusted EBITDA was $3.2 billion, also below forecasts.
The stock reaction reflected concern about profitability, cash use and the cost of Tesla’s push into “physical AI” products, including Robotaxi, Cybercab and the Optimus humanoid robot. Yahoo Finance said Tesla’s free cash flow was negative $1.09 billion, less severe than analysts had expected. CEO Elon Musk described 2026 as a major capital-spending year, while CFO Vaibhav Taneja confirmed capex would exceed $25 billion, close to analyst expectations of $25.16 billion.
Tesla said Optimus production remains planned for later this year, with early builds intended for internal training and development, but Yahoo Finance noted the company did not give clear timing for a product reveal or scaled production. Tesla also said its Robotaxi service had expanded across seven major metro areas, including unsupervised rides in several Florida cities, and Musk said miles driven were growing quickly while safety would shape the pace.
The report added that Tesla’s Q2 deliveries rose 25% year over year to 480,126, helped by the Model Y ramp and global pricing actions. Analysts cited mixed regional demand, tax-credit headwinds in the U.S., and investor questions about when Tesla’s AI-related spending will produce measurable returns.
