Tennent's Soccer Sixes returns with legends event

BBC Sport Football reports that the Tennent's Soccer Sixes is set to return later this year in a revived legends format, with all 12 Scottish Premiership clubs entering teams. The indoor tournament is being backed by the SPFL and will be staged at Braehead Arena over the weekend of 3 and 4 October, with Premier Sports due to broadcast the event.

According to the BBC, the competition format will begin with Saturday group stages. The 12 teams will be split into three regionalised groups of four, with the group winners and runners-up advancing to the knockout rounds, along with the best third-placed sides. Each match will produce a winner, and if games are level after normal time they will be decided by penalties, with an extra bonus point available for a shootout win. A sin bin will also be used.

The Soccer Sixes was a familiar part of Scottish football for nine years from 1984, when clubs often fielded many of their top players. The BBC notes that Partick Thistle, the last winners in 1993, will not be involved because they are now in the Scottish Championship. The revived event is being presented as a nostalgia-led showcase for former players and supporters, while also giving current top-flight clubs a high-profile off-season appearance.
