Ten aspirants eye Adjumani West parliamentary seat

At least 10 people have signaled interest in the vacant Adjumani West parliamentary seat, according to Nile Post, as the constituency prepares for a by-election after the death of Gen. Moses Ali. The report says Ali, a former defence minister and long-serving MP for the area, died on July 18, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, creating a race to choose his replacement.

Those named as prospective contenders include former Adjumani District LCV chairpersons Ben Anyama, Nixon Owole and James Leku Pilli; former Moyo West County MP Santos Piro Eruaga; Daniel Izale, who has been endorsed by the Patriotic League of Uganda; Gasper Draga; Kassim Ali, Gen. Moses Ali’s son; Justin Mawadri; Richard Madrara Obuni; and Patrick Tandrupasi. Nile Post said some aspirants have already begun meeting voters and holding consultations, while others are expected to make formal declarations.

The Electoral Commission has set polling for September 17, 2026, and outlined the roadmap at a stakeholders’ meeting on August 3 at Adjumani District Headquarters, where chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama presented the timetable. The process will move through nominations and a campaign period before election day.

The by-election is being watched closely because Moses Ali was a dominant political figure in Adjumani and the wider West Nile region. The Commission has also called on parties, candidates and supporters to observe the law and keep the process peaceful.
