Donczew is a product of Cardiff’s academy and is known for making an early senior breakthrough at the Welsh club. BBC Sport reports that he became Cardiff’s youngest ever senior player last October, before that record was later broken by Noah Anyadike in August. He was 15 years and 234 days old when he came on against Newport County in the EFL Trophy, and he made a second senior appearance in another EFL Trophy match against Wimbledon in December.

Cardiff said it had offered Donczew terms and tried to keep him at the club, but that he chose to leave the Welsh capital. Arsenal described the agreement as part of the pathway toward professional football. Donczew has represented Wales at youth level and is also eligible for Poland.
