Team Uganda Set for 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Nile Post reported that Uganda has selected a Commonwealth Games delegation of more than 50 athletes, including five para-athletes, for the 2026 Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The competition is scheduled for July 23 to August 2, and the team’s send-off was announced at a reception at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Nakasero attended by officials, sports leaders, athletes and media representatives.

According to the report, Uganda is expected to enter 10 disciplines, with named events including para swimming, para powerlifting, athletics, basketball, judo, netball, swimming, track cycling and weightlifting. Officials described the five para-athlete contingent as the country’s most inclusive Commonwealth Games team to date, framing the selection as part of a broader emphasis on access and representation in sport.

Deputy British High Commissioner Tiffany Kirlew linked the send-off to the British High Commission’s “More in Common” campaign, which the report said promoted friendship, resilience and shared values ahead of the Games. National Council of Sports chair Ambrose Tashobya said government support would continue, while Moses Mwase of the Commonwealth Games Association of Uganda urged athletes to reflect inclusion, excellence and unity.

The report also noted Uganda’s long Commonwealth Games record, citing 92 total medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 44 bronze. Nile Post said the 2026 Games are expected to feature about 3,000 athletes from 74 countries and territories across core and para sports, with venues including Scotstoun Stadium and Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
