Tayebwa Warns Lyantonde Residents Over Predicted El Niño rains

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has told residents of Lyantonde District to get ready for expected El Niño rains, warning that heavier rainfall could bring flooding to an area that has already faced prolonged dry spells. According to Nile Post, he said the rains should also be used to prepare gardens ahead of the next planting season, while households take steps to protect homes, farms and livestock from possible damage.

Tayebwa made the remarks in Lyantonde while representing President Yoweri Museveni at celebrations marking 138 years of Kinuka Church of Uganda’s service to the community. He linked the weather warning to broader concerns about agriculture, saying the district’s dry conditions have affected food production and water access in some communities. He also said government projects were under way to improve water availability, but urged residents to complement them by adopting modern farming and livestock practices.

The Deputy Speaker also used the event to call for action against vandalism of electricity infrastructure, after concerns were raised by Bishop Gaster Nsereko of West Buganda Diocese. Tayebwa said people involved in damaging power lines should be reported and prosecuted under existing laws. He argued that protecting electricity facilities would help safeguard supply and support economic activity in the district.

Nile Post reported that Tayebwa also delivered Museveni’s message, which praised the Church of Uganda’s role in education, health and social transformation, and encouraged Ugandans to join government programs aimed at moving households into the money economy.
