Tayebwa Meets Africa-EU Parliamentary Chair to Deepen Uganda-EU Ties

Nile Post reported that Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, met Hilde Vautmans, chairperson of the Africa-EU Parliamentary Assembly, for bilateral talks at the European Parliament in Brussels. The meeting was presented as part of efforts to reinforce Uganda’s relationship with the European Union through political engagement, peacebuilding and economic cooperation.

Tayebwa, who also serves as president of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States Parliamentary Assembly, was accompanied by Uganda’s Ambassador to the EU, Mirjam Blaak. According to the report, the discussions covered Uganda-EU cooperation, governance, regional peace and other shared priorities. Tayebwa also delivered greetings from President Yoweri Museveni and invited Vautmans to visit Uganda as a way to advance collaboration.

The Nile Post account said Tayebwa pointed to Uganda’s governance progress, its role in efforts linked to containing Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and its continued support for dialogue in the Great Lakes region. He also framed the Samoa Agreement as a shift in relations from aid-focused engagement toward a partnership model, saying Uganda sees the EU as a long-standing and dependable partner.

The meeting matters because Uganda and the EU have maintained cooperation across areas such as development, trade, governance, health and infrastructure for decades. Under the Samoa Agreement, the broader partnership between the EU and members of the African, Caribbean and Pacific group is expected to place greater emphasis on shared priorities and more balanced engagement.
