Tayebwa Endorses Muhoozi for 2031 Presidency

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has publicly supported calls for Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to position himself for Uganda’s 2031 presidential race, according to Nile Post. Tayebwa made the comments on Monday at a civic gathering organized by the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), where supporters launched a campaign urging Muhoozi to accept their request to lead the country after President Museveni leaves office.

The event drew ministers, MPs, senior citizens, business figures and other PLU supporters. Tayebwa framed the initiative as a lawful expression of public confidence in Muhoozi, saying it reflected his role in Uganda’s defence and development. He also said the call came from citizens themselves rather than from a political party.

Tayebwa used the occasion to clarify PLU’s political posture, describing it as a civic platform rather than a party. He said the group works alongside the ruling National Resistance Movement and provides a way to organize people, especially young Ugandans, around patriotism, national service and development. PLU has been expanding its national outreach on those themes.

Nile Post noted that the endorsement places Muhoozi, who serves as Chief of Defence Forces, at the centre of a growing conversation about succession ahead of 2031. The report also said the backing raises legal questions, since Uganda’s military law restricts serving officers from political activity.
