Tarik Skubal, The Tigers, And The Luxury Tax - MLB Trade Rumors

What the report says
MLB Trade Rumors reported that the Detroit Tigers face a complicated decision on ace Tarik Skubal before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, with the club’s luxury-tax position adding a major wrinkle. Steve Adams wrote that Detroit must decide whether to keep the two-time Cy Young winner for a postseason push in a weak American League race or trade him for a package that could strengthen the organization beyond 2026.
According to the report, the Tigers were 47-54 as of July 22 after recovering from a 6-22 May with a 25-16 run since the start of June. That left them 6.5 games behind the division-leading White Sox and five games out of the wild-card picture. MLB Trade Rumors noted Detroit’s remaining pre-deadline schedule included several games against losing teams, potentially giving president of baseball operations Scott Harris more information before making a final call.
The key financial issue is draft-pick compensation if Skubal stays, receives a qualifying offer and signs elsewhere in free agency. Because Detroit receives revenue sharing, MLB Trade Rumors said the Tigers could receive a pick after the first round if they are under the luxury-tax threshold and Skubal signs for more than $50 million. If they are over the tax line, the compensation would fall to after the fourth round, a much less valuable outcome for both draft position and bonus-pool money.
Using its payroll tracker, MLB Trade Rumors estimated Detroit is about $1.643 million above the $244 million tax threshold. The site said that could force the Tigers, if they keep Skubal and still want to add help, to shed salary or pursue low-cost acquisitions. Relievers Kenley Jansen and Kyle Finnegan were identified as possible salary-clearing trade candidates.
