Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi made the announcement and said Hassan had been dealing with a heart condition. According to the report, he died at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, and funeral preparations are underway in Kizimkazi on the island.

Hassan was described as an agricultural academic who kept a notably low public profile during his wife’s presidency. Samia Suluhu Hassan became Tanzania’s president in 2021, making Hassan the country’s first First Gentleman. The BBC notes that he was only occasionally seen at official events and was rarely photographed with the president.

The report says Hassan and Samia married in 1978, before her entry into national politics, and had four children together. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is a politician serving in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives. The announcement prompted public condolences, including from Kenyan President William Ruto, who said the news was received with deep sorrow.
