What the report says

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has inaugurated the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant, a 2,115-megawatt facility in Rufiji District in the Coast Region, according to The Independent Uganda’s publication of a Xinhua report. The project is presented as a major addition to Tanzania’s power system and a key part of efforts to expand electricity access and support industrial growth.

At the inauguration, Hassan said the plant’s new capacity should help lift output in manufacturing, trade, mining, agriculture, public services, investment and jobs. The report says the nine-unit plant now provides nearly half of the electricity dispatched to Tanzania’s national grid, which officials say should improve reliability and security of supply. The president also described the project as evidence of Tanzania’s technical capability and a base for further strategic development.

The article says the plant was built with participation from China’s Power Construction Corporation of China and Dongfang Electric Corporation. PowerChina handled major civil works and design, while Dongfang Electric supplied and installed the generating equipment. Project managers said construction created about 14,000 jobs for local residents and included skills training for Tanzanians in trades such as welding, carpentry, heavy machinery operation and surveying.

Economics professor Humphrey Moshi told the outlet the plant could strengthen Tanzania’s role in East Africa’s regional energy market and provide more dependable power for households and public services. More broadly, large hydropower projects are often seen as important infrastructure investments, though their long-term success depends on maintenance, grid integration and broader economic conditions.
