Tanzania: Zanzibar Tourist Arrivals Jump 18 Per Cent

Zanzibar recorded an 18% rise in tourist arrivals in August, reaching 124,481 visitors, according to figures reported by Tanzania Daily News and distributed by AllAfrica. The total was above both the 105,506 visitors seen in August last year and the 107,801 arrivals registered in July, suggesting continued momentum in the island’s tourism sector.

The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism said Europe remained the largest source market, contributing 72,304 visitors, or 58.1% of arrivals. Africa was second with 30,495 visitors, followed by Asia with 14,359. Italy led all individual markets, ahead of the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Kenya.

Most visitors arrived by air, and leisure travel accounted for almost all trips. The average stay was eight days, with most tourists spending between one and nine days on the island. The article said men made up a larger share of arrivals than women, and most visitors were between 15 and 64 years old.

The report also quoted a Zanzibar economist who said infrastructure improvements have helped make the destination more attractive, while emphasizing that security and continued investment in tourism businesses could support longer stays and higher returns.
